Tallis was not sure how much time had passed, but when her eyes fluttered open she could see the sun and no longer heard the gentle gurgling of the river. Like a nervous father, Donovan was pacing circles around Tallis as Tomas gently prodded at her now bandaged arm. She hissed in pain and Tomas quickly turned to see she had awoken. He smiled in relief and opened his mouth to speak before Donovan cut him off.

He stomped over to where Tallis lay and stooped over her, anger flashing like lightning in his deep brown eyes. Growling down at her he said, “Never ever do that again.”

Tallis furrowed her brow in confusion as Donovan pressed on. “You got arrogant thinking you could take a tremp by yourself and that cock-up nearly killed you! One bloody tremp, Tallis. Never tell me to back off again, understand?”

Tallis frowned, but was saved from having to answer by Tomas. “I don’t think it actually meant to kill her … she was not poisoned. The elf had a powder of sorts on its nails. It’s similar to the sleeping powder I was making. They wanted her incapacitated, not dead. Most curious….”

Donovan glared menacingly at Tomas. “Curious? You find this curious? Wodan’s backside, what is wrong with you, boy? She nearly gets her arm ripped off and you find the scum under an elf’s nails curious?” Tomas tried to stammer a response, but could not find the right words to calm Donovan’s anger.

Tallis pushed herself up on her elbows, wincing at the pain shooting up her arm under the pressure. “Leave him be, Donovan. Tomas is clever, of course he’d find this fascinating.”

Donovan glared down at his cousin. “Don’t defend the boy.” That’s when Rosslyn pushed Donovan, causing him to lose his balance and fall backwards.

Standing over him, Rosslyn said sternly, “Oi! Stop your bullying. Mistakes were made, aye, but we’re fine. Be thankful, you big lout, and stop yelling at everyone. You’ll wake the dead is what you’ll do, and then we’ll be in trouble. And, Tallis, do try harder not to get yourself killed. I can’t deal with your cousin when he gets like this.”

Tallis gave her a lopsided grin before apologizing to Donovan. “I’m sorry, truly.” Donovan did not respond, instead, electing to grab Tallis and hug her fiercely, letting his relief that she was all right show through the force of his embrace.
