Pillar #4: Innovation
T he fourth and final pillar is what I’ll call “innovation.” This will likely be the most challenging pillar for your firm to embrace wholeheartedly, but it’s one that promises to be a potent differentiator if you do.
Innovation, as I define it, is the habit of being on the lookout for new trends that might affect your firm and your clients and facing them head-on. It’s a mindset of courage and adaptability and curiosity. And it’s a mindset that is decidedly not natural for most law firms.
To provide your clients with Exceptional Customer Service, you cannot continue to lag behind the times as law firms have historically done. Instead, you need to stand at the forefront when it comes to:
Using new technologies to continually improve your firm’s capabilities. There will always be new trends, like better collaboration, better communication, better tracking of cases and matters, and easier ways to track time. There may even be practical applications for artificial intelligence (AI). You can’t jump on all of these at once, but you should stay alert for internal challenges that these technological improvements might address.
Guiding your clients through the legal ramifications of those new technologies. Can you, for example, represent disenfranchised employees who have been replaced by AI? Help someone with a dispute over a “smart contract” powered by blockchain technology? If you aren’t familiar with the technologies actively affecting those you serve, how well can you really serve them ?
