I place our drinks on the table and make the mistake of looking at my phone. I know Anna is excited to be planning the wedding again, but it’s almost offensive that she assumes that I’m chilling at home with Xavier, as if I have nothing better to do. Though, if she knew the truth about what I was up to, who I was with or where, I’m not sure that would be better. But I need to tell her about Reese just as soon as the competition comes to an end. And wouldn’t it be better to be able to tell her everything? To have all the details so that Anna can decide just what the hell to do next?

‘Oh good.’ Reese looks up at me. ‘You’re back.’

‘We need you again.’ Will smiles. ‘Well, that creative mind of yours.’

‘Will thinks that we should cut the influencers’ breakfast scene,’ Reese says, thrusting her tattooed arm out in the accused direction.

‘Why?’ I say, and clearly there’s a look of horror on my face as Reese’s gesture once again screams: Look, Will, I told you so.

‘Because he’s not in it,’ Reese says, with a sly little smile.

‘That’s not true, I just think it’s unnecessary. We know her social media following grows from her scenes with Jack.’

I look to Reese to find her rolling her eyes again.

‘Yes, but this breakfast shows what being invited into that world means and her conversations with fake friends there will highlight what a real relationship truly is.’

Does Reese know what a real relationship looks like? Is that what she had with Jake? Are they still sharing one together? I force my wandering mind back into the room.

‘Anyway, it’s staying,’ Reese says, slamming her hand down on the script. Case closed. ‘And I think we should call it a night. Anyone up for a real drink?’

‘No hot date?’ Will teases, brushing his hair behind his ears, the same way he did when Reese first disappeared on her ‘date’, back when I thought she was trying to make him jealous. Reese smiles coyly, her cheeks growing pinker before shaking her head. Is she thinking about Jake? Is my best friend’s fiancé responsible for that smile? This isn’t right, I should be with Anna; my loyalties will always be with Anna.

‘I’m busy tonight,’ I fib, before I’m reminded that Anna has sent me no less than ten messages about the wedding today. Maybe she needs company tonight? Perhaps she’s not as okay about things with Jake as she’s making out? That would make it easier to tell her what I now know, even though I’m still far from the full story. I look at Reese, gathering up her papers and hate myself for feeling a bit guilty for working out how to tell Anna the truth about Reese and Jake. What if Reese really doesn’t know he has a fiancée? What if she’s about to get as hurt as Anna is? Then another wave of guilt washes over me: after
