I waited for Champion Zorian to answer my question, and I was becoming pretty concerned about the look on his face. I’d never seen him look scared, but this was close. The crack in his mask was there. His heart pounded, and his eyes were searching the road, but I didn’t think they were looking at anything that was there. Those were the eyes of someone who was buried in their memories.

I reminded myself that he was still a stranger to me. I reminded myself that he didn’t seem to be the same person who’d tried to kill me under the shady starlight. I didn’t actually know who he was. His truths were still just as hidden as they were days and days ago. I knew he must have killed many people, but how easy would it be for him to kill someone’s mate without justification?

Was the mate bond the only thing that had kept him from killing me that night? He’d certainly had every chance. If Trail hadn’t moved me… would his claws have stopped by a hair’s breadth? There was no way to know. I just now realized that he never actually interrogated me after he put me in the dungeon. That was the only reason he’d given for taking me back alive. He must have been at war with himself.

I looked up at him again with truly no idea what he was capable of and if he was a changed male. A sheen of sweat had dotted his forehead, and his posture wasn’t as regal as usual. He looked vulnerable. It almost frightened me more than his outbursts because it was so unlike him.

“We don’t have to talk about it now,” I said gently and reached for his large hand. I took a risk because sometimes compassion got answers sooner than anything else. If he had killed her, maybe he’d already been punished for it. Maybe he’d already punished himself for it. “I feel like I’ll need to know eventually, though… if that’s part of why I’m being targeted.” He flinched when I touched his hand, and I withdrew my arm. “S-sorry.”

I stopped in the road, undressed, and shifted into my wolf form. This was the only other way I could offer comfort. I couldn’t ask him questions if I was shifted, and we could just focus on traveling. It looked like he needed to work through some stuff, and I wasn’t in a rush to know this very moment.

He turned to see what I was doing, and his shoulders slumped a little more. He looked relieved and situated himself to shift as well. I’d made the right call.

When Spine led Trail off the road, I knew we were finally going cross-country like Champion Zorian had said. How many more days on foot? Was it four? I could handle that. I was also hoping we’d lose the mysterious messenger. The only notes I was hoping to wake up to around here would be from birdsong.

The day seemed to go by much faster with the changing scenery.
