Chapter 7

“Well, if it’s not the party girls.”

A stocky guy with a deep tan and big smile greeted us at the door, his eyes lingering on Gertie’s blue face. I recognized Jimmy’s brother from my cousin’s wedding reception several weeks before. Clearly, he remembered some things about the party last night that we weren’t aware of.

“Hi, sweetie,” Jayne said and gave him a hug, then turned to us. “Hey, everyone. This is Luke, the best brother-in-law in the world.”

Luke grinned and welcomed us inside. “Lulu is cooking up some lunch. I expect you’ll stay for some good cooking.”

Jayne dragged Gertie into the kitchen to greet his wife, and Ida Belle took the opportunity to get straight down to business. She seemed rather tense since we stashed a man inside the Cadillac. Heck, I guess all three of us did.

“Luke, I hear you got some great footage from the birthday party yesterday.”

He grinned. “Are you trying to destroy all the evidence?”

Ida Belle lifted an eyebrow while Fortune tried to hide a slight frown. My stomach hit the floor.

Luke laughed. “I’m just kidding, it’s not that bad.” He went to a back room to get the video. “Make yourselves comfortable.”

We sunk into the sectional couch and kicked our feet out on the ottoman. It was so comfortable I could see myself falling asleep within minutes if I had one at home. Fortune’s attention was diverted to the sixty inch TV in the corner of the living room, and she elbowed Ida Belle in the ribs.

A news reporter gave details of a stolen Cadillac taken from a murdered young couple near a prison break in the south-east. It was a little hard to hear the announcer due to all the giggling and laughing coming from the kitchen. It sounded like Gertie and Jayne were having a ball with Lulu.

I tried to focus on the photo splashed across the news screen, mainly because Fortune and Ida Belle were captivated by it.

Fortune turned away from the screen and stared at Ida Belle. “Same license plate.”

How does she remember random stuff like license plates?

Ida Belle frowned.

My back tensed as I slowly realized they were talking about the exact car that sat out in Luke’s driveway. The Cadillac we’d been riding around in… that just so happened to have an airbrush artist tied up in the truck. That until yesterday belonged to a young couple who had been killed by some maniac who broke out of prison.

Nausea overwhelmed me, and I thought I might throw up.

“I sure hope Granny and Jimmy are okay.”

“Oh they’re fine,” Luke said as he reentered the room and handed Ida Belle a laptop, unaware of the Cadillac situation. “They stopped by here this morning and borrowed some extra guns. Jimmy wanted to give his new Granny some shooting lessons and teach her about different kinds of weapons.”

Ida Belle had to cover her mouth to keep from laughing. Although I’d never seen it with my own eyes, Ida Belle told me my granny could shoot the stem off the apple at one-hundred yards, or something like that.
