I rushed back into the house and found Ben, still on the phone in the kitchenette. He waved and held a finger to his lips. I tip-toed into the living room area and sat between the cats, bursting with energy. I needed to get my story done, but I didn’t think I had enough time to finish it before my meeting at the hotel bar. I pulled out my laptop and Razzy leaned closer, whispering.

“What’s up?”

“I got the okay from Tom to run with the murder story. And I have a meeting with the woman who was in the house.”

“Success!”

I glanced at Rudy, but I didn’t have the heart to shush him. He was such a joyful creature and the person at the other end of Ben’s call would only hear meows. Sometimes, I forgot we were the only ones who could understand them. Rudy got the message and settled back down on the couch, tucking his paws underneath him.

I scooted closer to the table in front of the couch and began typing in the outline for my story. This old trick of mine would make it much easier to finish my story before Tom’s deadline, but I had little time to spare. My fingers flew across the keys and I zoned out, not noticing Ben had returned until Razzy bumped my arm. His smile crackled with something a little extra.

“Sorry! How long have you been standing there?”

Ben chuckled and sank down next to me, picking up Gus so he could have his spot.

“Just a few seconds. Why are you typing like a demon?”

“It’s more like a woman with a machine gun,” Razzy said, eyeing the keys. “I don’t know how those tiny keys can make so much noise. They never do when we type.”

I bit my lip to hide my smile. One of Razzy’s pet peeves was the way I typed. I’d tried to change it, but when I zoned out, I forgot.

“Sorry, baby girl. Tom got back to me,” I said, pivoting towards Ben. “He gave me the okay to run the story about Brendon Grange’s murder.”

Ben opened his mouth, and I held up my hand and kept going.

“Don’t worry. I won’t name names. Well, not yet. But this story needs to be told.”

Ben nodded and scratched his chin. He hadn’t shaved this morning, and his scruff softened the hard lines of his jaw. I blinked for a second, distracted. What were we talking about?

“Well, that’s going to be interesting. We’ll want to be up bright and early tomorrow, huh? I have a feeling we might have some upset people next door.”

“Hooray for the power of the press!” Razzy said, leaping across from the couch to the coffee table. “They can’t keep us down.”

“That’s not all,” I said, closing my laptop before her celebratory dance created some unnecessary keystrokes. “I ran into the woman who was inside the house. She wants me to meet her at the hotel bar in an hour. Oops, make that thirty minutes. I’d better get ready.
