2.1 The Imperial Pilgrimage of the Kanji Era

In the 3d month of Kanji 7 he made a pilgrimage to the Kasuga Shrine, as he had vowed to do the year before. He brought a dancer with him, and made sure the rites were done as beautifully as possible. The Palace Minister1 and those under him did Katamai,2 while the Minister of the Left3 joined the musicians. The precedents were most encouraging,4 and the Divine Will must surely have been pleased.

Later on, during the Kōwa era, he had the Canon copied, built a Sutra Repository for it at the Shrine, and assigned a hundred monks to read the sacred texts.5 He also ceded to the Shrine in perpetuity the Kawaguchi estate in Echizen province, as an endowment to support his gift.6 Everyone apologized for having been afraid on that other day.7 Ever since, each imperial generation has shown matchless devotion, and there have been many imperial pilgrimages to the Shrine.

Some years before, Lord Korefusa8 had secretly prepared a plaque that read “Go-kyōzō,”9 having been instructed to do so in a dream. When an oracle revealed the plaque’s existence it was called for, and affixed to the Sutra Repository’s south gate. They say it is still there.
