Bethany did her best to obscure the two guards standing at least a third of a meter taller than her as she carefully opened the heavy door and angled her body in.

The room smelled like fresh paint and cheap plastic, a far cry from the plant-rich, ionized atmosphere in the alien ship.

Atom was nestled in the far corner, arms wrapped again around her knees, head buried in between with her long red locks hiding the remainder of her upper body. Somebody dressed her in a medical gown and stapled up the back so it wouldn’t fall off or expose her, likely at the request of Dr. Tran, who, according to Elias, was now officially off the project and reassigned to a remote research site in northern Alaska.

This was the first time Bethany had seen Atom in person since the abrupt landing at Dulles in Virginia. She stood still, cautious, lowering her chin and brow, attempting some form of psychic nudge to get Atom to look up. But she didn’t.

Talking, Bethany reasoned, probably wasn’t the way to approach things. Adding a strange language to an already terrifying situation would just shut her down even more. That might have been Tran’s mistake.

Instinctively, Bethany turned her head toward the picture of clouds on the wall, attempting if she could actually see the rest of the group looking back at her through the one-way glass. Despite being completely unsure of what to do next, she lacked any fear or trepidation. She felt sure of her purpose. She looked back at Atom and decided it was time to take a step.
