After his second glass he rose on tipsy feet, switched off the lights in his room and was about to make his way to bed. But just as he was drawing the curtains of the south-facing windows, he noticed something outside. This time he knew he wasnât mistaken. There was a small yellow light shining in the gloomy darkness.
It was coming from the direction of the annex.
There were a few garden lights installed in the courtyard, but they were hardly visible in the heavy rain and strong wind.
Absolute darkness reigned outside. The shadows cast by the house had consumed all light save for the little coming from the annex hall on the opposite side of the courtyard. Mitamura and Mori were probably still busy with their game of chess in the annex hall. But the light Kuramoto had noticed was high up to his left, somewhere near the windows of the first-floor hallway of the annex.
What could it have been? Kuramoto wondered again. The lights in the first-floor hallway were off. So what was the source of the swaying light that had disappeared so suddenly?
Had someone lit a cigarette in the dark hallway? But what heâd seen didnât look like the flame of a match or lighter. It was much more like the light from a torchâ¦
Raindrops streamed down the window as Kuramoto moved his face closer to the glass. He tried to peer into the darkness beyond, but he couldnât see anything. He could just about make out the windows of the hallway on the first floor, but there was no light to be seen now.
He told himself it wasnât worth thinking about. He was just on edge because of the events that afternoon. He was exhausted and his knees were aching, probably from sprinting down the gallery as fast as he could after the fall.
He silently drew the curtains in his room, went to bed and fell asleep.
