EUGLENA

This is a flagellate organism found in a pond or in a long-standing plant infusion. The organism is provided with an eye-spot, which is recognized by its red color (Fig. 66). Since the flagella are usually recognizable only after the animals have been killed, add a drop of potassium iodide solution (or, lacking this, tincture of iodine) under the coverslip. Euglena is green and has many other characteristics of plants; it is therefore grouped with the algae. Permanent preparations are completed as with spirogyra (see page 74).
