As a kingfisher stares at a fish,

As a goldsmith concentrates on the gold while working it,

As a dissolute man cannot take his eyes off another man’s wife,

As a gambler fixes his eye on the dice before throwing them,

In that way I look to you, O Ram, I see nothing but you.

For ever Nam is lost at the feet of God.

Namdev recorded something of his long search for God:

I sought the truth in Vedic words

and heard them say ‘you shall’ and ‘you shall not’.

There is in them no potency for peace:

they make it seem the power is asked of me.

I sought the truth in Shruti hoping its words

would show the form of God, but all its words

were wrangled, tangled, torn by those

who lose their way in error and in pride.

Then in Puranas next I sought

the form of God but could not settle there.

I heard men speak of Brahman, but their minds

were set on lust – no path of peace …

They glorify in words the Name on high

while down on earth they’re snared in ropes of sense.

Lord, here am I, here at last, weary with seeking,

Lord, at your feet I lie: no more the world’s glint and fear.

Nam says: save me, O save me, now and here.
