Chapter 11

Wednesday, November 18th

The incessant ringing of my phone yanked me from sleep, and I groped for it in the dark as my heart raced.

“Ma! Good morning. How are you? I miss you.”

Hearing Rudy’s excited little voice over the phone made me smile. The cats were very adept at using the apps we installed on their tablets in case they ever needed anything and wanted to reach us. Razzy sat up next to me and leaned closer.

“Good morning, Rudy. Is Gus with you?”

“Hey, lady. It’s good to hear your voice,” Gus said.

“You both have made my entire morning,” I said, trying not to tear up.

I missed them both so much it made my heart hurt. I’d grown accustomed to our daily routine and had been looking forward to the day when we all moved in together. That made me think of the apartment we’d put a deposit on and were due to move into within a few weeks. What were we going to do?

“Rudy, are you minding your manners? You’re not getting into trouble, are you?” Razzy asked, a purr clear in her voice.

“I’m being great, but I want to come home,” Rudy said. “When can we all be together again? This has been weird.”

“Yeah, lady, what’s going on? Ben already left for work and he’s not himself these days.”

I sighed, unsure of what to tell them. All three cats were way smarter than we gave them credit for, and I knew they were worried by the undercurrents and what wasn’t being said.

“Hopefully we can all be together soon, boys. I miss you both so much. I’ll talk to Ben today, okay? Maybe you two can come spend the night.”

“That would be awesome! Ok, Ma, we better go.”

“I miss you, Razzy,” Gus said, his deep voice sounding sad and hesitant.

Razzy gave a little trill and leaned into my side.

“See you soon,” she said.

I ended the call and hugged her close, trying to keep it together. She turned in my arms and put a soft paw on my face.

“Mama, we’ll figure it out. It was good to hear from the boys. I never would’ve thought I’d miss that little menace this much. And Gus...”

“I hear you, baby girl. I’m going to jump in the shower and get to work. The sooner we get all of this sorted out, the better.”

As I stood under the hot water, I collected my thoughts and tried to make a game plan for the day. I got out of the shower and got dressed before heading to the kitchen to feed Razzy and make some coffee. It needed to be strong today.

I was deep in thought as I put Razzy’s bowl in front of her and took my first sip of coffee. I closed my eyes, feeling my brain receptors light up as the caffeine zipped through my system. Ahhh, that was just what I needed.

“Razzy, I’ll probably be in the office all day, today. Did you want to come with me?”

She lifted her head up from her bowl and swiped her tongue over her face before answering me.
