The capture of Simms, coming so soon after the loss of Captain Hay, was another blow to the LRDG that they could ill afford. Then a few days later there was yet more bad news.

Lloyd Owen inherited Simms’ task of reconnoitring the coast ahead of a planned thrust by XIII Corps. The Corps Commander briefed him on what he wanted in the way of intelligence and was of the belief that ‘we really had them on the run’. ‘Y1’ Patrol set out for Marada at almost the precise moment the Germans went on the offensive. By 24 January the Afrika Korps had occupied Msus, and the LRDG withdrew from Jalo, first to Ghetmir, twenty miles east, and then as the German advance continued, all the way back to Siwa. One of those caught unawares by the speed of the German thrust was Captain Richard Carr (no relation to Lofty Carr), the adjutant of the LRDG. He, and seven other men from the HQ section were on their way to Msus to collect a quantity of petrol when they fell into enemy hands.
