CHAPTER THIRTY

Kavyn pushed his plate from him. The meal should have been adequate, should have sated him, but the hunger he felt was a gnawing need for power, and now, vengeance. Perhaps, he could serve up a potent helping of each.

Although he had been quite young and had played no direct part in his father’s murder, he had willingly concealed his knowledge of events for more than a decade. Such concealment was more than guilt by association and a treacherous act. He knew this. Knew that this was as his mentor had intended, but it bit into him with venomous fangs, poisoning his thoughts and gnawing on him. He needed to find a way to circumvent whatever plot Teraxin was now putting into play. The old goat thought himself the ultimate strategist, but he was weak. His soft spots would be his doom, but Kavyn needed to act fast.

He glanced across the room to the waiting girl. Her coppery curls hung down in swirls that caressed her neck and shoulders. Her high cheekbones, and dark eyes, scintillating in the lamplight. He sent his thoughts at her, a tentative nudging at her guard as she bent to tend the fire. Minimal resistance met his probes, so he pushed deeper, slipping inside her thoughts, listening in as she thought about the chores remaining to be done before she could leave and go to her home on the eastern edge of the citadel. "Keliss," he whispered, having caught her name from a memory. Ah, yes, he remembered this one. A sweet he had tasted before. Excitement rose in him.

She started, and turned toward him, surprised he recalled her name, her cheeks flushed with emotion. "Is there something you need, Your Grace?"

He looked her up and down, his eyes feeling their way across the curve of her breast, sliding along her hips. She blushed harder and her face grew taut, making it clear she did not share his desire. His next push inside her mind was sudden and less than subtle, causing a sharp intake of breath, but it mattered not. As before, the girl would remember nothing of the encounter, and besides, he liked the way her bosom rose when he forced his way fully into her mind and overwhelmed her thoughts. The way she fought for control. The way she struggled against him. The fight was invigorating and it made the physical domination so much more exciting.

Her hands came up and began unlacing her bodice. She fought against it, her eyes those of a trapped animal, but she no longer controlled her own actions. Kavyn played her like a puppet as she stripped out of her overdress, watching with unbridled excitement as her consciousness shifted, until finally, she dove deep inside herself and the light went out of her eyes.
