“If you knowingly pass up a 60-to-40 opportunity, you’re not a top player.”

— Greg “Fossilman” Raymer

Oddly enough, many casual players claim that they would fold. If they believe this will improve their expected winnings, they are mistaken. But are there rational reasons to fold? There don’t have to be.

Casual players often make bad decisions, and what separates winning players from casual players is that winners consistently make better decisions. However, there are rational reasons to turn your back on an EV calculation. For example, your values might not be the same as the values used in the calculation. You might value staying in a live televised tournament for its entertainment value, and not just the prize money. You might not view a $20,000 prize as worth twice as much as a $10,000 prize; each might let you do the same bragging at the office. You might value winning the tournament as an extra reward beyond the prize money, worth more than a collection of lower cashes totaling the same amount.
