The flying carpet meanwhile returned to the Pavilion-of-Shame and looked at Shiloh, who was terrified, probably wondering what the skinny boy was doing in his house. After lifting its corners as though it was shrugging its shoulders, the carpet rolled over and lay down to rest in the corner.

Nitai, who continued to live in the Pavilion-of-Shame in order to protect Shiloh from the dark creature waiting for the right time to attack, tried to overpower and ride the carpet several times before despairing, with the carpet simply shaking him off over and over again like dirt.

“I’ll still going to command this psychic rug one day!” he swore angrily, and Shiloh sighed and went on flipping through the Adventures-of-the-Signal-Child-for-Youngsters… which he already knew by heart, but could not really recall any event from these incarnations.

Nitai tried to credit Ursalaima with something positive: “Well, really. The abuse tradition only takes place on Mondays. The humiliation is once a week! The rest of the week we keep our honor. But”—he was once again outraged when he sat in the Pavilion-of-Shame and tried to fill in an Aramaic crossword puzzle in the Cordaykoos magazine—“Abba-Sikra is supposed to teach us offensive structures and cooperation between Orians and Sicarii. But it looks like he just likes to see you lose to Csilai.”

“Do you think he hates me?” Shiloh pretended to be surprised.

“Maybe, or he hates roast chicken in general.”

But as a counterbalance to Abba-Sikra’s negative attitude toward him, many admirers of the Wretched-Soul were eventually revealed, and a new sentiment was added to his world—both embarrassing and encouraging.

“They must have found out where you live.” Nitai scratched his head as Shiloh faced a new phenomenon: baskets of offerings wearily laden with goodies that awaited outside the Pavilion-of-Shame. These were mostly delicacies and candies to which personal letters were attached, but sometimes also dead animals and broken objects that perhaps the poorest of Ursalaima thought that by sacrificing the little they had, the soul of the hermit would think of them as good. When, in addition to the offerings, there were people who would not leave unless he shook their hand and blessed them, Shiloh discovered that there were layers of embarrassment within him that he did not know about.

“To the soul of the mighty Wretched: Please pray for my mother to recover. She has had a cold for two weeks,” Nitai read from a note left to him by eight-year-old Shilin Kalish. “Did you hear, Shiloh? In your next prayer, remember to ask for a full recovery for Yifra, daughter of Akunis. And here is a letter that came from... yes, from a Sicarii. He has sent you a sesame snack, with the explanation that... ‘Chickens love it.’ I like sesame snacks, so thank you, idiot. By the way, did you change your mind about Simon?” he asked in hope. Yesterday, when they got back to the pavilion, they discovered a garden chair outside. Nitai was excited to try it out but thought the dark figure had cursed it so that harm would come to anyone who sat on it.
