Bhrán ran from his classroom and headed for the one place he knew he’d find Elyon, the janitorial station.

The boy burst through the door and found his friend bent over a tub of washing.

“Thank the Lords that day is over,” Bhrán said as he dropped his books on a table in the corner.

Elyon looked up from his work, smiled, and asked, “Another tough day at the mines?”

The Elf laughed at his own joke, one he asked every time Bhrán entered the room.

The boy rolled up his sleeves and dropped to his knees beside the dimwitted Elf. “The toughest,” Bhrán replied as he helped Elyon with his work. “I swear, Master Fenqen is the most boring tutor in this place. His voice would send the undead to sleep.”

Elyon chuckled. “You’re not the first I’ve heard say that.”

“Really?”

“The other students don’t seem to see me, so they say all sorts of things in front of me. They might not notice me, but I hear them.”

Bhrán reached out a soapy hand and patted the Elf’s shoulder. “I see you, Elyon.”

“And I see you, Bhrán.”

“What do you have planned for tonight?” Bhrán asked as he set to work on a particularly stubborn stain.

“I was planning on heading to the Singing Falls. What about you?”

Bhrán knew the Singing Falls was Elyon’s absolute favorite place to relax. The simple-minded Elf would listen to the musical tones of the water as it cascaded over the rocks to the river below.

“If it’s alright with you, may Suds and I join you?”

Elyon beamed his big, dopey smile and nodded. “I like Suds. He tells me the best stories of the world outside. For instance, did you know he was once friends with Werewolves?”

“So I’ve heard.” Bhrán nodded. He’d explained many times to Elyon that those Werewolves were distant relatives of his, but the Elf seemed incapable of retaining that detail.

“Suds is the bravest Elf in all the realm. He’s my friend, and my....” Elyon stopped himself mid-sentence and placed a hand over his mouth, muffling his following words. He then removed his hand and apologized. “Sorry, Bhrán, but I nearly said something I shouldn’t.”

Tears formed in Elyon’s eyes, the result of his near indiscretion.

The two had become very close over the months, and the Elf confided things in him that Bhrán knew Elyon told no one else.

On more than one occasion, his simple friend had stopped himself from letting something about Suds slip from his lips.

The boy knew Elves were extremely private folk, which must be hard for an individual like Elyon. He was always so open and honest, something his kind rarely were. It was not that Elves had some clandestine motive for their secrecy. They just took a long time trusting. At least, a long time in mortal terms.

Bhrán decided not to press the Elf on what he meant by his last words and instead said, “He is funny, too.”

Elyon instantly brightened and nodded emphatically. “Aye, he’s hilarious. He even made Shalheira laugh, and she never does.”

A bell outside rang, and Bhrán jumped to his feet.
