A New Perspective on Love and Intimate Relationships from the Viewpoint of Conformity
Another social value that is highly debated is the expression of love between sexes. It has undergone drastic changes with the result that it has altered the stability of intimate interaction between people and affected the sense of well-being of many people. Free love with or without cohabitation has been advocated as an alternative to marriage in response to the criticism of the institution by the womenâs liberation movement. It is regarded allegedly as a panacea for the conflicts of intimate male-female relationships. Somehow it was felt that this new approach to the relationship would permit each partner to maintain his or her independence while operating within the ideology of the womenâs liberation movement, that emphasized the emotional and economic liberation of women from the social constraints imposed previously by men. Indeed, the feminist liberation ideology fulfilled the prized desire in most women to be free and compete socially and economically with men but at a price, that is, the destabilization of their relationships with men. However, it legitimized their social demands by trying to minimize the existent differences in personality make-up and social interests between the sexes and stressing their similarities. To justify the new social position of women, the old psychological differences between the sexes were reinterpreted, like the expression of aggression, logical abstraction, and so forth, attributed now to the socialization process. All in all, the conclusion pushed for by the feminists was that sexes are basically the same, except for the biology of reproduction. Obviously, the biological-hormonal differences didnât disappear, though they became inconsequential for womenâs access to job opportunities. This was because the new technologies blurred the distinctions of work roles between sexes. The technology that made the housewifeâs work almost obsolete has opened up vast areas of employment for women.
