And anyway, always bear in mind that the oldtimer’s maxim holds as good today as ever it did in the days of black powder, especially where dangerous game is concerned: “Git as close as y’ can, laddie; an’ then git ten yards closer.” Get as close as ever you possibly can, and then make dead certain of your shot. The shoulder shot is by far the best for all animals, particularly dangerous game, (and incidentally the biggest target). Do not think in terms of behind the shoulder — the vital spots lie between the shoulders. Slam your bullet thru the bone and the animal will drop instantly — I am, of course, assuming that you are suitably armed — with spinal concussion and will die of rapid internal hemorrhage owing to the bullet and particles of broken bone tearing their way in thru the main arteries situated at the top of the heart. He will not get to his feet again.
