Chapter Thirteen

Hunter turned around, and she could see all the blood drain from his face. As always when he was around…dogs, as he called them–his face was rid of emotions. When their eyes met his face changed from surprise to disbelief and then to anger.

“Mellowic, meet…”

“What are you doing here?” Mellowic interrupted Kaine before he could say another word.

After Hunter had dropped her off, she hadn’t expected to see him ever again. Seeing him now unleashed a tornado of feelings. At first, she was happy. He’d always brought a homey feeling to her heart, then she remembered how it had felt to be with him after meeting Kaine. She wasn’t the same woman anymore and certainly didn’t feel the same towards him that she’d felt for most of her life.

Hunter’s eyes traveled up and down her body as if he wanted to make sure it was her. When he confirmed to himself that she was indeed Mellowic he closed the distance between them. With each step he made, her reluctance towards him increased.

Kaine was right behind him, but she quickly gave him a warning look. She could feel his confusion and anger. Instinctively, she opened her mind to him.

‘Don’t.’

Kaine stopped in his tracks, shocked and surprised to hear her through the mind link. He looked at her as if he needed conformation and she opened her mind to him again.

‘Don’t move.’

Kaine didn’t like it, but he nodded and stood frozen while Domenic and Blair stepped closer. All three of them were tense and she could see their eyes darkening.

Hunter was now standing in front of her. “What did that dog do to you?”

He forcefully grabbed her jaw and tilted her head while tugging at the neck of her shirt exposing her mark. She felt sick to her stomach and had to suppress a gag.

“What the fuck is this?” Hunter’s voice was dripping in disgust.

Kaine’s response was a deep and threatening growl but before he could say anything Mellowic stepped in. “Kaine’s mark.”

“Mel, what did they do to you?”

“Nothing.” She tried to relax and leaned into Hunter’s touch while looking up into his eyes. Hunter never came without a backup plan and with him discovering that she’d been marked, he would definitely choose his plan B. She forced herself to relax and soften her face as she pretended to lose herself in his eyes.

It was working because Hunter’s expression changed from rage to worry. “Mel, I will get you out of here,” he said as his hand loosened the grip on her jaw and his thumb gently caressed her lower lip.

Kaine disliked this and was about to jump Hunter and rip his throat out. She could feel his possessiveness fill the air, and out of the corner of her eye saw his muscles twitching. Domenic and Blair were just as on edge as Kaine, ready to stand by their alpha’s side to protect their luna.

With her eyes still fixed on Hunter, she opened her mind to Kaine. ‘Stay out of it.’

Kaine answered with a growl, but she quickly shut him and his feelings out and focused on Hunter.
