The Arianyte Empire Decree #76

Arianyte will now enforce a strict Network surveillance system, monitoring keywords and phrases to identify potential rebels, dissenters, references to the Star, and revolution. Any person found to be supporting rebel activity will have their use of the Network revoked. Any encryption or privacy tools, virtual private networks, or circumvention of artificial intelligence to subvert Arianyte will be detained and questioned for rebel activity.

Waking up in Ardelle’s arms is both beautiful and tragic.

Beautiful in the sense I feel safer and more seen than I’ve ever been, so glad I gave him a second chance.

And tragic because, now, we must leave each other. It’s made even harder by the time we have in the shower together, where Ardelle gives me all his flesh once more, and I let him take me over the steaming water until my legs are too weak to stand. Anything to forget what’s waiting for me at the start of game two later today.

“I’ll sneak out of here with Jance and the others,” he tells me once we clean and finished getting ready. I put the lens back into my eye before we walk out the door. “Hopefully, Malakyte or his goons will see right past me and let me leave.”

“Your bow and arrows are hidden in the bag?” I ask, making sure he doesn’t get spotted over something as stupid as that.

When he confirms they are, I get an inkling and ask, “Can you leave me an arrow, actually? Never know when one could come in handy. I can shove it in my sword sheath.”

“You’re a crazy girl, you know that, Thumbelina?”

I shove him with my shoulder playfully, and he responds by coming down to kiss my lips. The fresh cinnamon of his toothpaste blooms under my nose, and I blush slightly at the memory of last night and this morning. How I moaned his name over and over again.

I bite my lip playfully.

As Ardelle and I make our way down to the hangar from yesterday, I remember something I meant to tell him last night.

“So, you know how I told you my old friend Gavrielle is actually alive, right?”

He nods, keeping the two of us to the shadows as best we can. Ardelle isn’t supposed to even be here. We can’t get caught.

“Well,” I begin as we sneak past a couple of maids, “there’s something wrong with him.”

I explain to him Gav’s memory loss and how it’s like he was given an entirely different life and remembers that one rather than the life he actually lived. We hurriedly sneak down a set of servant’s stairs and through the kitchens. Once there, we find a heavy metal door that leads out to the hangar from yesterday. Many of the remaining Titans are already crowded around and waiting for their interviews and meetings with their family members.

“Go,” Ardelle tells me, pointing towards the group. “I’ll meander into the crowd of families. I’ll get out of here just fine, Thumbelina. I—” He stops short, eyes a bit conflicted.
