Chapter Eighteen

Mercy stared at me. “Come, let us discuss the matter at hand.”

Her voice was changed—devoid of snark, smoother in tone with a strange cadence. “You are the Morrigan, I presume?”

“Your friends are here with me,” the Morrigan said. “They are well. I will return their volition when we’ve finished speaking.”

The three girls turned and walked in step, almost like they were members of a marching band, and walked toward the Vilokan Asylum extension, the old Mulledy mansion.

Cassidy and Ryan moved to the perimeter of the living room, staring at them with wide eyes, and the three girls, now possessed by the Morrigan, sat down at the table.

“Coffee?” I asked.

“I will have a cup. Sisters?” The voice speaking through Mercy’s mouth asked before turning to Julie and Hailey, respectively. They each raised a hand and declined.

Cassidy and Ryan got the hint and stepped into the kitchen to retrieve a cup. They knew me well. They didn’t need to ask. Cassidy set a cup in front of me. Ryan set a cup in front of Mercy.

“I am Babd,” the voice of the Morrigan within Mercy said. “These are my sisters, Macha and Anand.”

“Pleased to meet you.”

“We were not always as we are, Doctor Cain. Though, you walked the world even when I and my sisters were human still. It is not often I have occasion to speak with one older than I.”

I took a sip of my coffee. It was warm but not hot. “I know the feeling. I’d love to spend more time getting to know one another, reflecting on the good ole days, but we have something of a crisis on our hands.”

“Indeed, we do,” Babd said, taking the cup of coffee into Mercy’s right hand and lifting it to her lips. She cocked her head. “An interesting beverage. I relish in new experiences. I cannot say this one is altogether pleasurable.”

I grinned. “It’s an acquired taste.”

“The Baobhan Sith is not as vile a creature as you might believe. She is a part of the balance that maintains all things, that guards the divide between life and death. She represents creatures immortal. Vampires, for certain. It was an inevitability that she would eventually seek you.”

“She triggered my mark on purpose? She wanted the seven-fold curse?”

“It was necessary, Adam’s son. In Annwn, or what you might call Eden or Guinee, the balance of life and death is maintained. The divide between the garden groves of Eden and the blighted lands of Samhuinn is one through which most all will pass in time. Yes, even vampires and werewolves, like you, will one day meet their end.”

I shrugged. “Well, six thousand years and counting, no end is yet in sight.”

“It is an inevitability. You are capable of death, are you not?”

“I suppose. Enough silver, I suppose, could do it.”

“Do you not imagine that even you might one day lose the resolve to live?”

I shook my head. “I can’t imagine that.”

“Eternity is an awful long time. You cannot say that you will never grow weary of this existence.
