Rim of Grand Canyon you see a flat gray rock terrace that hangs on the very lip of the Inner Gorge, It seems to be quite bare and looks Hke a very dull place indeed.

When you walk along the Tonto Trail (which runs the whole length of the Tonto Platform and is nowadays, Hke the Apache Trail, really a wild burro trail) you find that the gray-ness you saw from above came not from rock but from sparse, dowdy, knee-high bushes. This scraggy fleece part-covers a coarse and often stony soil that varies in color from pale green through gray to almost purple, according to which layers of the many-hued Tonto shale and slate He close to the surface. And the Platform turns out to be by no means as flat as you had imagined. Even when you swing around a ridge or butte onto the prominent spurs, or headlands, that were all you really saw of the terrace from the Rim, you are always climbing a slope or easing down its far side. You spend less time out on these spurs than you do in sidecanyons, for the sidecanyons cut back much more deeply than you had imagined. And in these canyons the going is rough.

You are in for another mild surprise too. Although the Platform hangs on the Hp of the Gorge, the Tonto Trail tends to hug the inner talus, and you rarely see the Colorado. Occasionally you hear the faint roar of rapids. If you walk to the edge of the Platform, there is the river, a thousand feet below, at the foot of its plunging black walls. But if you keep to the trail you find yourself walking quite alone, in a world cut off from everything above and below.

Away to the left cuts the black chasm of the Inner Gorge. It is a barrier to more than your body. Because of it, the cHffs and terraces beyond are not a part of your world. You look at them, of course, may even take time to study a particular feature; but mostly (if your mind works the way mine does)
