Desmond ended his call, stuffed the cell phone in his pocket, and put the steering wheel in a death grip. âI finally managed to get through to the cops and let Detective Reed know youâre alive. Sounds like thereâs been at least three Limbus attacks all over the city. Theyâve only just got them under control. I gave them the Collectiveâs address. Theyâll do a raid as soon as theyâve got people together.â
âTheyâll enjoy that,â I said.
âGoddamn it, guy. God fucking damn it.â
I lay in the back seat, my shirt undone so I could inspect the damage from the shotgun blast. It looked like another trip to the doctor was in order. Lucetta was in the front passenger seat, tending to a graze on her hand. She hadnât said a thing since we got in the car and tore away from the old factory.
âYou know how lucky you are?â Desmond said. He jerked the steering wheel to the side and passed a slow-moving van. âIf Lucetta hadnât called me, youâd be dead by now.â
âA slurry.â
âWhat?â
âThey were going to turn me into a slurry.â
He tugged his fingers through his sandy hair. He was a Tunneler, so he must have sensed what Iâd done with the Limbus animals. But he hadnât mentioned it. He was too busy playing the angry mother bit.
âYou couldnât just let the cops handle this, could you? You had to get involved.â
âHey, I didnât walk to that factory by myself. I was bird-napped. From the same goddamned police youâre so fond of.â
He shook his head. âYouâve been digging yourself a grave since this thing started. Are you trying to get yourself killed? You really think thatâll make up for whatever sins you think youâve committed?â
The sun flickered between buildings as we passed. It made me nauseous, so I closed my eyes.
âIâm trying to get answers.â
âBy yourself? I donât think so. Youâre trying to be a martyr.â
I was too tired for this. âIâm not trying to be anything.â
âThen why arenât you working with Detective Reed on this? She contacted me. She told me about theââ
âLook, thanks for the save, Des, but Iâm fine,â I said without opening my eyes.
âThen youâre going to drop this?â
I said nothing.
âYou need that shoulder looked at,â he said.
âScrew that. Take me home.â
âYou needââ
âI donât need a hospital. Iâm fine.â
âNo, guy, youâre not. Iâm taking you to the hospital, and then Iâm calling Detective Reed.â
âYou do that, and I tell the cops about all this quasi-vigilante stuff youâve been up to.â
He hit the brakes. The car skidded to a stop, making my stomach lurch. Des twisted around to stare at me. His eyes were hard. Mine were harder. I wasnât going to a hospital. I couldnât afford to waste a second. No matter whatâor whoâit cost me.
âDo you mean that?â he asked.
âYeah.â
Des nodded slowly, turned back to the road, and started driving again. When he spoke again, his voice was quiet, emotionless. âThen you can hold on a few minutes. I need to do something first.
