Maybe it was Reba, or maybe it was Laura, or maybe it was just me, but that weekend I got my act together. I went out and bought a secondhand sofa. And a coffee table, end table, two lamps, and an electric frying pan. And on Saturday, I took the seersucker suit to the cleaner’s, bought a new shirt and sports jacket and two pairs of slacks. I got my hair cut and had the first manicure of my life. I called up an old friend and met him for drinks at the Longbranch Inn, and smiled and greeted Glenda Sue like the old friend she was instead of like the guilt I was carrying around in my back pocket.

On Sunday, I went to church with Mrs. Horne for the second time in a row, had Sunday dinner with her, fixing the salad myself, and spent all Sunday afternoon working with her in her fall garden.

By Monday morning, I had a sore back, new clothes, and a cleansed soul. Milt Kovak was back with a vengeance.

Sitting at my desk in my office, I went over my notes on Mrs. Munsky’s murder. A lot of notes. Not one of them meaning a goddamn thing. The one thread I hadn’t pulled all the way out yet was still good old David Perry. I had an idea now, after my talk with Reba, about what David and Blocker had been doing over that weekend, if not where. I drove up to Mountain Falls Road and pulled into David Perry’s drive.

“My lawyer’s going to sue you people for harassment, Kovak,” he said by way of greeting.

“I’m just fine, David,” I said, letting myself in, “how you?”

“You can take your so-called redneck humor and shove it up your ass,” he said, following me into his living room.

I sat down in the easy chair and looked up at him. Some people think looking up at somebody puts them at a disadvantage. It doesn’t bother me at all. Makes me feel all “ah shucks” and Colomboish, if you know what I mean.

“How long you and Blocker Mays been lovers, David?”

Now that did take him by surprise. He sat down. “What in the fuck are you talking about?”

“You wanna tell me where you two lovebirds were hiding out that weekend?”

“I want you to get the fuck out of my house,” he said, but he didn’t move.

“Now there’s no law in Oklahoma against that, not right now anyway. Used to be, not anymore. Unless, of course, you two were playing around with little boys. I know how Blocker likes that.”

He stood up. “Get out.”

I stood up and pushed him back down. I was getting fed up. “Jesus, David. The sheriff wants to lock your ass up for raping and strangling old ladies. And you were out humping Blocker Mays. Seems to me you might just as well admit to that. Beats the hell out of a capital charge.”

He leaned over, his head dropping low between his legs, arms on his knees.
