Violet bit her lip. “We should make each virus a different color,” she said, pointing to the tubs of purple, blue, and white clay.

“Sounds good,” said Pablo. They each grabbed a tub and rolled the clay into balls.

Violet held hers in her hands. “The Maker Manual says this is the capsid.”

“It’s like the virus’s body,” said Pablo, reading over the instructions.

“Now, time to add these,” said Aria. She held the bags of pins up by her ears. Some were long and pointy, and others were short with round-button tops. One bag had pins with colorful six-sided flat heads.

“It says here that those are viral proteins. They help the virus get into cells.” Pablo continued reading.

“Looks like I’ll need some of the long pins and the round ones for the influenza virus,” said Violet.

“I need a few of those long ones, too,” said Pablo, holding the model adeno-virus. “And the flat ones with the hexagon heads.”

Aria handed out the pins. She took some of the round ones. “The norovirus doesn’t have any of those pointy ones. Just a bunch of these small button-shaped ones.”

The Makers stuck the viral protein pins into the capsids.
