Later that evening, Sun meets her fiancé, Yao Jun, for dinner. Yao is in a dark mood—sales are down—and he has little patience for Sun’s breathless summary of her week in Harbin.

“Boiled alive?” Yao says. “Tian! Who would do such a thing?”

“That’s what I’m trying to find out. Isn’t it exciting?”

“Disgusting, more like. And how long do you think you’ll be on this case? I don’t love the idea of you being in Harbin by yourself.”

“I’m not by myself. I’m with the deputy chief and two investigators from CIB. CIB! Me! Can you imagine?”

“Sounds dangerous.”

Sun reaches over and puts a hand on Yao’s arm. “It’s sweet that you’re worried.”

“Of course I’m worried. This is why I want you to quit. Can you picture us going to a wedding or New Year’s dinner with friends and someone asking you about your work? And you telling them you’re working on a homicide in which a man was cooked in a vat of hot oil? Everyone would immediately lose their appetites. Not to mention the fact that you’re off in another city in the company of strange men. I know what cops are like. Dogs, every one of them.”

Sun withdraws her hand. Yao spends the rest of the evening talking about something more to his liking—himself. As he prattles on, Sun fantasizes it is Detective Tian sitting across from her, discussing the nuances of the Pang case, rather than Yao pontificating on fluctuations in the price of organic fertilizer.
