An hour later, Rylee closed the notebook in frustration.

Emily had been sitting quietly next to her the entire time. Now she raised an eyebrow questioningly.

Rylee held up the notebook. “This doesn’t help me at all. There are all sorts of entries under a heading named food, but I’ve never even heard of most of the things in there.” She opened the notebook again and ran a finger down one of the pages. “Like, what is angata?” She looked up.

Emily nodded. “I can answer that. It’s a kind of plant that…”

“What?” Rylee pressed.

Emily looked away, annoyed. “I think this might be a bit too much right now. Just accepting that the house is alive will have to do for today.”

Rylee grew angry. “Why don’t you just tell me what you were going to say?”

Emily sighed deeply. “Okay. There are other worlds besides this one. Other inhabited planets other than Earth, I mean. The plant you mentioned grows on one of the other worlds.”

Rylee stared at her. Now she was completely convinced that the old woman was out of her mind. “Other worlds?” she echoed weakly.

Emily nodded uncomfortably. “I know what you’re thinking.”

Rylee energetically shook her head. “Oh, I’m pretty sure you don’t!”

Emily stood up. “Your face gives it away. I understand you better than you might think. All this is too much for you. But I’m afraid there simply isn’t enough time to let you take it all in in tiny little digestible bits. You saw how the A´gor reacted to the state of the house. And you were lucky that the folks pursuing him had not yet tracked him here; the house’s defenses are too easy to penetrate at the moment. And as long as you deny the true nature of your task, not much will change around here. The house simply cannot do everything on its own!”

Rylee dropped the notebook and stood up. “So what am I supposed to do?” Her voice cracked with anger. “I feel like I was dropped right into the middle of an insane asylum!”

The house shook at her words. “You be quiet!” Rylee yelled. Then she slapped her hand over her mouth. “You happy? Now I’m going crazy too!”

At Rylee’s outburst, Emily took a step back. The expression on her face was indescribable. “I suggest you go to the basement and look through some more of those notebooks. Maybe you’ll find some answers there. I’m going to go to my room now, and if you have not accepted your role by tomorrow, I will leave.”

Rylee’s mouth fell open in surprise. “But... I didn’t mean it like that…”

But Emily had already turned around and was walking quietly back into the house. Rylee went to the kitchen and dropped into a chair at the table. She put her face in her hands and sat there in silence for a long time. Eventually the cat appeared and jumped onto the table. Purring, it rubbed itself against her. That brought Rylee out of her stunned inertia. She gently pushed the cat away and stood up.
