Chapter 6. The Tower of Stone

Taro looked up at the tower of stone that jutted from the earth like a sword, extending up and beyond the cloud cover. As he approached it on foot, he was struck by how much he didn’t know of the world. His connection with the Essence was growing stronger, true, but even it could only show him so much of the unknown. In the end, it just proved the fact to Taro that there was a much bigger world out there.

The female dragon had been right. Something drove him towards the tower, a force he couldn’t explain logically. It was a feeling, an instinct that he had to be there.

He paused for a moment, clutching his forehead. The Queen Dragon’s memories were still in his head, slowly pouring into his own memories. The line of distinction between what his and what was his predecessors was becoming blurred. He was becoming unsure if his actions were his own, the dragons, or possibly something else, a mixture of both.

As he approached the tower, a new wave of anxiety began to claw at him. Was he going to the wrong place? The tower didn’t seem nearly wide enough to house a council of dragons, nor could see any indication that anything else lived in the stony quarters. Even forgoing that, he, a human with dragon powers, but a human nonetheless, was about to wade into a sea of dragons.

He thought that, as he got closer to the tower, the pulsing would subsist. Instead, it grew stronger, guiding his feet through the cracked stone land surrounding the rock. The land in front of him sloped downwards, opening up into a small opening in the stone face.

He peered inside, looking through the dark crevice. He stepped back, drawing on the Essence, creating a small ball of fire in his hand. With his new light to guide his step, he descended into the opening.

The ground beneath him continued to slope downwards, and quickly the air turned cool and wet. He could hear an underground river flowing nearby. After a few minutes of walking, he realized that crystal stones jutted from the rock walls that emanated their own light, creating a natural aurora of bluish-green light

There was a noise behind him, a foot slipping on the wet ground. Taro reached for his magic. He heard someone mutter something, and suddenly he felt drained, cut off from his magic source. In fact, his entire body was sapped of energy as he collapsed. Someone caught him, cursing under their breath in a strange language. “I told Dragomir this place was too conspicuous,” he said in common tongue. “We’ll have at least a dozen of these stragglers by the end of the night.” He strained to crane his head to look at his captors, but his body didn’t respond.

Another voice, a voice that sounded familiar, responded. “No, look at his magic. He’s one of us.”

“Him? He’s a boy!”

“You know age doesn’t matter. And regardless, he has been blessed with one of our spirits.
