Chapter Twenty-One

"I think it is just splendid that you are available to be our new receptionist," Killian gushed as Lacy sat on his desk, legs crossed, and poured him another cup of coffee. "I always said we needed a receptionist, did I not Maggie?"

They both looked over at me. "You did," I replied. "I'm not sure how we're going to pay you, though, Lacy, seeing as how I'm disbarred and Killian couldn't find a magical object with a GPS."

Lacy waved me away as she flicked back her hair and flashed a smile at Killian. "Oh, I'm just happy to have some time here cooling my jets with y'all. We can figure out little details like salary later. Tell me more about the elfin forest, Killian," she said, leaning closer and running a finger down his arm.

I was on the edge of throwing up Pipistrelle's lovely breakfast, so I broke into their little office hijinks.

"Hey! Turner and Hooch! We have a little problem here!” I reminded them. “Namely that someone wants me out of the picture."

"Oh, we can figure that out later," Lacy dismissed.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Figuring out who wants you dead," she replied, rolling her eyes. "Did it never even dawn on you to take a look to see who you REALLY pissed off?"

"Usually it is something I remember."

She opened up a file, licked her thumb, and started leafing through. "See, working where I work, I find out who is friends with whom. I bet you don't even know that half the people you bring in to me are related."

"That's a lot of interspecies cross-pollinating you're suggesting."

"Everybody's got an itch to scratch."

"I'm pretty sure it’s Vaclav," I replied. "It’s always Vaclav. I mean, it is beginning to look like there is someone even bigger and badder than Vaclav, but it always comes back to that jerk."

"Why do you always think it’s your vampire buddies?" She pulled out another file and gave me a knowing smirk. "Here you go. You and your dad did that job a couple months back where you figured out a politician was personally seeing to the needs of one of his constituents. A Medusa I believe? Y'all got a lot of good press from that."

"Yeah," I said, remembering. Right after we freed my Dad from the boundary, we had hauled in a misbehaving politician who was vacationing with a Medusa in the Mediterranean. "What does that have to do with anything?"

She whipped out a piece of paper. "Did you know that particular politician is related to
