Chapter 14

Thursday, October 5, 2017

“Hyperion!” Meagan called, not for the first time, looking down from the second-floor balcony that overlooked the living room. The cat was nowhere to be found. She’d started with Sweetie and was now trying his name. If he didn’t answer soon, she was willing to try less polite variations, even with a teenage witness.

He was in for a major punishment if he’d gone out into the woods after specifically agreeing not to. She had no idea what it would be, nor did she really know what the damn cat would think was a punishment, but punished he would be.

Kaylee emerged from the garden, shaking her head to let her know the massive four-legged pain in the ass wasn’t out there either.

“I’m so sorry,” she told Meagan again, heading toward the guest suite, even though Meagan had already searched there. “He said he was going to take a nap. I should have checked.”

“It’s not your fault,” Meagan called down. “I’m sure he planned the whole thing ahead of time. When you came over, it must have seemed like the perfect opportunity.”

“If I’d known he was going to be an idiot, I’d have gone home instead. It’s just I haven’t been able to come over very often, and really do like spending time with him. So, when my mom said I didn’t have to go back to school after my doctor’s appointment, it seemed like — yeah it seemed like a bit of good luck, for a change. I was a little disappointed he wanted to nap, and that you needed to run errands, but I didn’t think it would lead to this.”

“It’s not your fault,” Meagan stressed again, raising her voice to carry down the hallway. “I’m as much to blame as anyone — other than him. I’ve been needing to pick up some supplies and when you came over today, I jumped at the chance instead of waiting until the weekend. But, after this, I swear I’m going to get one of those electroshock things for his collar. I’ll feel a little bad, but, with therapy, especially if I let the therapist meet him, I’m sure I’ll be able to come to terms.”

“Nothing,” Kaylee reported from the guest suite hallway. “He has to have gone outside.”

“I can’t believe he would do that. He swore he would stay inside until the new alarm system is installed, especially if you were visiting. Grab your jacket and a flashlight. I’ll check my bedroom, then we’ll go outside and holler some more.”

There was no point in searching for him in the woods. He could hide five feet away and they’d never see him.

Her bedroom door was pocket-style, sliding on a track into the wall to maximize space. Chris Rodriguez had jokingly, at least she hoped, suggested she motorize it and put it on a motion sensor so it would act like one of the doors on Star Trek. The suggestion had stuck in her head, but it had been a silly extravagance when she’d lived alone.
