The Lunar Dragon

Faye sat curled up on her favorite rock, basking in the sun as she surveyed the fields before her. The warm summer air vibrated with shouts and cries from her peers, and every which way she looked, their magic shimmered in her view. Towers of flame scorched the sky, giant waves swayed on the lake, small black clouds crackled with lightning and thunder, and massive boulders crumbled into pebbles and dust. The display was both magnificent and intimidating, but not in the least bit surprising. After all, the magic trials were in a week, and every young dragon needed to prepare.

As if they hadn’t already been for the last five years.

Faye sighed. Had it already been so long? As she watched the other fledglings practice, she thought back on all the times they had bullied her in the past. She could still hear the teasing as if it were yesterday.

“Monochrome!”

“Colorless!”

“Pale-face!”

But those names hadn’t bothered Faye in years. In fact, ever since she’d stopped letting their taunts push her away, many of the other young dragons had lost interest in teasing her. In time, she almost began to feel like one of them—except for the fact that she was still the only dragon in the entire clan whose scales didn’t shine with vivid color or generate magic when sunlight touched them.

Faye looked down at her dull white scales and smiled. They had once been her greatest shame, but now they were her secret pride.

Emphasis on secret.

It had been five years since Faye discovered her power, but she was still the only one who knew about it. As far as anyone else knew, she was an Achromatic, a plain white dragon with no magic. What they didn’t know was that her power came from moonlight, which turned her scales silver and gave her unique abilities. After much thought, she had chosen to keep it a secret: the longer she kept everyone in the dark, the greater the impact would be when she finally surprised them with her true potential at the trials.

But that meant exercising more patience than she ever knew she had—and suppressing the envy that came with it.

All the solar dragons had the luxury of long daylight hours outside, during which they could store endless amounts of magic in their scales to use whenever they wished. But being a lunar dragon in a clan that did not allow wandering outside at night, Faye had to be much more resourceful. Her magic was a finite resource, and she couldn’t afford to squander a single drop of it.

In preparation for the magic trials, Faye had spent the last three months using every tactic imaginable to store as much moonlight in her scales as possible. She frequently dawdled back to the Crystal Cave after sunset to catch the first rays of moonlight. She slept as close to the entrance as possible to sneak a leg or tail out into the open. And every clear night, she stayed awake until the others fell asleep so she could sneak out for an hour or two, soaking up the welcoming rays of the moon.
