The Turners lived in a nicer suburban area, with rows of houses that were all similar. It looked like the homeowners’ association allowed everyone just three colors of siding, and everywhere you looked, everything was done in shades of tan, darker brown, and cream. I parked outside their house and looked around the neighborhood. There were kids running down the street, bundled against the cold.

I walked up to their house and rang the doorbell, wondering if this was where Gillian had grown up. It was nice, but a far cry from the apartment she shared with Martin. The door swung open, revealing a tall woman with gray-streaked curly hair. Her face was drawn and my heart went out to her.

“Mrs. Turner? I’m Hannah Murphy. We just spoke on the phone.”

“Yes, of course. Please come in. We’ve had some friends over and I’m afraid the place is a mess.”

As was true of most people who said that, the house was sparkling clean and showed zero signs of clutter. I thought of our apartment and shrugged. We kept it pretty clean, but it was a constant battle to keep up with the cat hair. I followed Darlene through to the living room, where an older man was sitting in an armchair, staring at the wall. He didn’t look over as we sat down, and I remembered Kim said he had some health issues. Darlene took the chair next to him and pointed me towards the couch. She touched his arm as she spoke.

“George, the reporter woman is here.”

He turned a pair of sorrowful, dark eyes in my direction. His face was lined heavily, and he looked like he didn’t really see me, even though I was sitting across from him.

“Hi, Mr. Turner. I appreciate you both being willing to talk to me. I can’t imagine what you’re going through.”

He nodded and gripped the arm of his chair.

“Those other papers are smearing our daughter’s name, and ours, through their rags. I trust you’ll print the truth and not supposition?”

His voice sounded like gravel, but it was clear and his eyes finally sharpened as he spoke to me.

“I understand. I may work the crime beat, but my focus differs from other reporters. I prefer to learn everything I can about the victim and treat them fairly. I think people are suspicious because Gillian was found at the store when she shouldn’t have been there.”

“You’re the one who found her?”

I nodded, wishing there was something I could do to ease their pain. Losing a child was awful, particularly in the way Gillian had been killed.

“I was. Do you know why she was there when she wasn’t scheduled to work? I’m having a hard time figuring out how she could bypass the code. Kim is adamant she never shared it.”

George shook his head and grimaced.

“You can take everything that woman says with a grain of salt. Gillian always talked about how many extra hours she put in helping Kim without pay, mind you. She took advantage of our little girl, and now Gillian’s gone.
