Chapter twenty-two

Ever

Nerida sat at the edge of the dark water, arms around her scales, and Moira assumed they were at the lake Nerida and Pyrros had decided would be their camping place while Moira was away. Nerida said something to Pyrros with a blank face, but Moira could not hear the words.

Since Moira had asked for both of them, the mirror shifted to show Pyrros, who replied with a frown.

They did not look happy, far from it. Their expressions turned darker with each dialog they uttered. Moira wondered what they were saying, yearning to be there. Maybe she could have calmed them down.

Pyrros said something, and a fury Moira had not seen before ignited Nerida’s eyes. She looked ready to spew fire, as though she was the dragon of the two. Red spots appeared on Nerida’s cheeks, her chest heaving.

Then she said Moira’s name and their words spilled out from the mirror as if a switch had been turned on.

“—Moira as payment! You thought it was okay for the mountain witch to murder her, as long as it made you debt-free! I’ve saved her both times, in the sea and from the witch.”

Tears burned in Moira’s eyes. She did not want her best friends to fight, did not want to watch as it fell apart.

But she could not bring herself to close the mirror.

Pyrros, the great dragon, withdrew and recoiled his tail in front of him like a cat.

“That’s not what I meant—”

“Sure you did.”

Nerida’s voice was icy cold, her eyes blazing. “Just because I’m not going on about how worried I am about her, just because I don’t talk all the time, like you two and your incessant chatter, just talk, talk, talk all the time! Do you think I’d have followed her halfway across the world, days and days from my ocean, if I didn’t care for her? Who do you think you are? You betrayed her!”

Moira swallowed hard, could not help but look, could not stop the words from burning into her mind so she would never forget them.

“You’ve looked like everything around you smells bad since the first time I met you.” Pyrros sounded nothing like the dragon Moira knew. His tone was almost as harsh as Nerida’s, but not quite icy. “Like you’re above the rest of us, and you don’t give anyone else a chance—let alone a second chance. No, I don’t know that you care, because you don’t show it. When Moira left, she wanted to hug you, but you just sat there. What do you expect people to think?”

Moira’s cheeks heated. Had her wishes been so obvious?

Nerida paused and stared at Pyrros with her mouth ajar, almost ready to deny it, but could not find the words. She clenched her jaw again, the hardness back in her eyes. Moira knew before she said it that she intended to crush Pyrros with her words.

“And you behave like her best friend? It was you who mentioned humans in the first place, even though nowhere in the witch’s book was it written that humans were even remotely connected to Ea.
