Chapter Fourteen

We flew to the stones and lowered ourselves to the ground. We were at the base of the rocks that surrounded our home. This was the only part of Gardenia without a patrol, we could easily cross the border without being seen. We had to move quickly, and we couldn’t fly. Once we were on the other side we could easily walk towards the forest and the forgotten garden. The furthest I’d been was the garden, and that was on a trip for royal lessons. What was beyond that I wasn’t sure.

We climbed the giant rocks, little by little, Michael leading the way. We were quiet except for the sound of our heavy breathing and the occasional grunt. It was almost therapeutic, both the climbing and the quiet. I wanted a chance to tell Michael about Ailbe but climbing rocks was not the time. As we climbed, I watched the sky light up, the rocks turning brighter, and the sky turn blue. The rocks warmed underneath me, as they were cold to the touch in the darkness.

I grew tired by mid-day, but we were only halfway up the rocks. “Why,” I asked through heavy breathing, “couldn’t we just fly quickly over the side of the rocks?”

“Because,” he huffed back. “They have Sylphs in the sky all over the place, they would’ve caught us.”

“And how will they not catch us when we get to the top?” I could barely breathe, and my hands ached.

“It should be nighttime by the time we get to the top. We just need to climb into a crevice of the rocks and sleep there, then we will not be seen.”

“And on the way down?”

“We will hide in the crevices of the rocks to not be seen. There should be search parties by tomorrow morning.”

We grew silent again. The sun felt good as it went through the day, it warmed me, although my hands remained cold. I wondered if Michael was lost in thought, or if he was purely concentrating on getting us over the rocks.

It did take all day to get to the top of the rocks. My hands were blistered, and I was exhausted. We found a crevice, just as he said we would. It was big enough for us to lay down our sleeping bags, and sleep. He felt that we were safe enough where we were that we could both sleep. He figured that would end soon enough, so we should take advantage. I slept as far from him as I could, even though it was a tight space. I was painfully aware of how close we were to each other.

We woke early the next morning, ready to start all over again. I cursed Michael for his plan, knowing it would’ve taken a day less if we’d just left through the front of Gardenia or flew over the rocks, but I tried to understand his reasoning. If we were seen leaving and not coming back, then the search would start sooner, and we would’ve been stopped.
