Chapter

Sixteen

Alaric sat across from Vance in the dimly lit room, where the flickering light from the oil lamp cast long shadows across the walls. The air was thick with anticipation as Vance spread out the map on the table. He traced the lines and annotations with practiced ease. Alaric leaned forward, scanning the three locations marked on the map. Each one represented a possible lead on the lost pages of the Aetheric Codex.

“These three locations,” Roderick began, his voice low and measured, “are the most likely places where the pages could be hidden. I pieced together the information from old texts, rumors, and research. It’s taken years to narrow it down to these specific sites.”

Alaric studied the map intently. The locations were spread across the continent, each near a different town on the rail system. Forgotten ruins, ancient places that had long since been abandoned, now possibly held secrets that could change the course of history.

“Are these all the locations?” Alaric asked, his gaze shifting to Roderick.

Vance shook his head. “No, these are just the ones I’ve figured out. There could be more—many more. But these three are the most promising leads we have.”

Alaric nodded thoughtfully. “It’s a start. But it’s also a gamble. We could spend months, even years, chasing these leads and coming up empty-handed.”

“True,” Vance agreed, “but we don’t have the luxury of time. Magnus is out there and won’t stop until he has what he wants. If he gets his hands on the lost pages before we do, we may be unable to stop him.”

“How did you figure out these locations?” asked Alaric

Vance gave a small, almost wistful smile. “It wasn’t easy. Most of it came from old texts, scattered references in obscure manuscripts, and stories passed down through generations. I spent years traveling, talking to anyone who might know something—scholars, old villagers, even the occasional rogue who claimed to have seen something unusual. It was like assembling a puzzle, one piece at a time.”

Alaric listened intently, impressed by the sheer dedication and perseverance that Vance had shown in his quest for knowledge. It reminded him of his pursuit of understanding in the arcane arts, the long nights spent pouring over ancient tomes, seeking answers to questions most people never even thought to ask.

“Tell me what happened with Magnus,” said Vance.

The memories of their last confrontation were still fresh in his mind. He recounted the events to Vance, explaining how Magnus had sought the Aetheric Codex for its power and how he had manipulated and used others to further his own goals. The battle between them had been fierce, with Magnus nearly succeeding in his plans. But Alaric, with the help of Finn, had managed to thwart him—at least temporarily.

“Magnus is relentless,” Alaric said, his voice tinged with weariness. “He won’t stop until he has the power he craves, and the Aetheric Codex is the key to that power. If he finds the lost pages, there’s no telling what he’ll do.”

Vance listened intently, his expression serious. “We need to find those pages before Magnus does.
