No one was certain where the Seers had come from, or why they had chosen these four cities to cheerfully lay to waste over the years. They claimed there was a girl (as these things go), that she was missing, and that they wanted her. What they wanted her for they were never clear on, but after the first city unceremoniously blew up, the last three took notice.

The four cities on four hills had been settled during darker ages, but managed to live near one another in peace since as far back as the proverbial stories went. Travel between them was common and word spread. The curse had been clear to each: Give her to us, or else.

North had the least warning, and had taken the threat the least seriously. The Seers arrived in North at midnight, sometime in the late fall, and asked to be taken to the city’s finest alehouse. The guards had neglected to ask the obvious—and in retrospect, necessary—questions. For example, “How did four old men in robes climb a mountain in the dark with no discernible light source?” Or perhaps, “Say, that’s a neat stick you’re holding there. Why is the top smoking?” They had sent for the city’s finest alcoholic (lawyer) who took it upon himself to parade the Seers down North’s own version of The Row until they reached his favorite watering hole.

There were four Seers, each tasked with cursing a different city. North’s doomsday declaration was given by the oldest-looking one. Grey-headed and gnarled, he, despite his advanced age, climbed on top of the bar with ease. He held his arms open wide, waved the aforementioned stick around, and declared that if the girl with the lavender eyes was not handed over to them within five years of this pronouncement, the city of North would be consumed by both fire from above and fire from below.

The men had started to snicker at the sight of Knobby Knees mounting the plank of wood and were incapacitated with laughter by the time the whole business with the lavender eyes and the unearthly fire came about. The people who settled the Four Hills had been a practical, no-nonsense group of travelers (Dutch), and if any of them had seen or known of magic in their old lives, they were careful to leave it behind. Magic had not been one of the crafts passed down by the families of North, and common sense had not been one of the virtues passed down to the patrons of the tavern. It was fortunate the Seers elected not to turn them into bar gnats on the spot; though, in the long run, North might have been better off for it.

The Seers were ushered out of the gates with the utmost decorum and spirits for the road. As they turned their backs to go, it occurred to one of the guards to ask how they might find them should a girl with lavender eyes turn up. Knobby Knees responded with,
