Settling in

“I am Lord Kimrad, and it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the home of the Shikari.” Lord Kimrad opened his arms wide in a gesture of welcome. His face was warm as he smiled round at them, but his eyes remained cool and calculating. Elowen wondered what those eyes had seen in his time as a Shikari.

He continued, “You have travelled long and far, so I will not bore you with too long a speech. I only wish to say that I hope you will eat and be merry, for tomorrow your training starts, and it will not be easy. The coming days will see you participate in a series of tests that will determine your abilities. At the end of the tests, you will be placed in a group of similar abilities and skills and you will use the rest of the time to train hard before the start of the Tournament. Please be sure to make use of all equipment and trainers at your disposal. Should you, at any point, wish to back out of the tournament, we will not stop you. I need not remind you that this tournament has seen many injuries, some deadly, and though we will do our best to ensure your safety, we cannot make any promises. You must, therefore, be absolutely certain before taking part in the tournament.” Silence followed his words with a few entrants shifting in their seats as though eager to prove themselves. Elowen tugged nervously on her ponytail as her stomach did a weird flip-flop.

Lord Kimrad continued after a short pause, “Alright, then, dig in, everybody.” He gave them one last smile before making his way to the large, throne-like seat at the centre of the main table. He sat and reached for his silver goblet before leaning toward Buze and striking up a conversation with him. A pleasant hum filled the hall again as everyone began talking. The music swelled as the musicians began playing a merry jig that had Elowen tapping her foot with the tune. She took a bite of her roast potatoes, savouring the flavours that danced on her tongue, as, opposite her, Dros and Mol began speaking to Damien about the previous year’s Tournament in between mouthfuls of butternut soup.

“Remember that one boy who lost his eye?” Drol was saying, his voice higher than Elowen had expected. He had a pleasant, but serious face that made him look older than she suspected he was.

“Yeah, and we called him ‘Morkos’,” laughed Mol, a deep, throaty laugh. He, too, looked serious, though he had a twinkle in his eyes that made Elowen instantly like him.

Elowen frowned at the unfamiliarity of the word. “Morkos?” she repeated, thinking hard to remember if she had heard it before.

“Af’r un-geyed weeta ee-a naima,” said Hally, her mouth full of bread. She swallowed with effort, then tried again, “After the one-eyed creature that feeds on nightmares.”

“Will we have to fight that in the Labyrinth?” asked Elowen, concerned, causing her voice to rise slightly in pitch.
