SETH

“Zara?” I knelt in front of her, steadying her as she swayed in her seat. Oh fuck. I’d pushed her too far. “Zara? Come back to me sweetheart.” I gave her a gentle shake. “Eli,” I yelled, striding over to the door and nearly pulling it off its hinges in my haste to fling it open, “Eli, I need you NOW”. He was there in an instant.

“What the fuck did you do to her?” he asked, seeing her almost catatonic on the sofa.

“I think I broke her,” I panicked. “I told her too much.”

“Do you want me to make her forget?” He crossed the room and knelt down beside her.

“NO! I can’t go through having to tell her again, even if I could probably make a better job of it with a little more planning. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

“If she’s going to be part of our world, she’ll have to get used to things not happening the way they’re supposed to,” he grunted. “Let me try and take a look at what’s going on in that head of hers.” He placed his hands gently to her temples and I swallowed a growl at the sight of him touching my mate. “She must be totally overwhelmed,” he announced. “It’s like she’s zoned out completely.” After a few moments he rose and stepped out of her line of vision, just as she blinked and looked up at me. Eli disappeared in a blur of vampire speed, leaving the two of us alone and I took his place kneeling in front of her.

“I’m so sorry, I shouldn’t have just sprung it on you like that. Are you okay?” She nodded.

“I think so,” she said. “It’s just a lot to take in and I’m suddenly feeling so very tired. Could I just lie down for a bit?”

“Of course, sweetheart. For as long as you need to.” I scooped her up into my arms, relieved when she curled into me like a sleepy kitten as I carried her towards our bedroom. Our bedroom. I loved the sound of that. I’d been so worried she’d be afraid of me once she knew what I really was, but she’d accepted everything seemingly without a second’s hesitation. Setting her gently down on the edge of the bed, I tugged off her trainers. “You’ll be more comfortable without these,” I told her and pulled back the quilt. “In you get sweetheart.”

“Okay. Thank you,” she whispered. I pulled the covers up around her, smiling as she burrowed deeper into them. Her voice halted me as I headed towards the door. “Where are you going? Aren’t you staying with me?” She sounded so vulnerable. She wanted me to stay. The block of ice my heart had become over the centuries melted a little more at the thought that she needed me, and I fought the temptation to just crawl in beside her and forget about everything else for a few hours.

“I promise I’ll be back as soon as I can.
