Chapter 36
The young woman eyed him up and down appraisingly and smiled, a faint blush visible through the heavily applied mask of beauty products. Colm had been fast asleep before the last of the passengers had even boarded and he folded back his long lean frame as the girl poked his shoulder. Feeling instantly exhausted and in need of a long shower, he scratched his bollocks through his grubby black jeans without a trace of embarrassment.
‘Hello, as you seem to be the only passenger in this extra-legroom row, sir, will you be happy to help us out in the event of an emergency landing over water and take the responsibility for opening this door here and-’
‘Pull this bit here!’ Colm correctly identified the relevant handle and did his best to smile despite his bad mood. ‘Sure I will and I’ve been through this a fair few times, so you’re fine, thanks.’
‘Oh, that’s grand,’ she said, her Irish brogue escaping for a second. ‘You’re a keen one! We don’t get many like yourself.’ And with that, the woman was away attending to the myriad tasks that needed to be taken care off before take-off.
Colm settled himself back to try and sleep but as the smell of their first onboard meal began to waft malevolently down the aisle, he knew instantly it wasn’t going to happen. He decided she was most likely to be correct in her assumption that there weren’t many like him on their overnight flight to London.
He doubted that any of the other passengers would be on a fake passport or would have bought and paid for the entire row to avoid being disturbed on the slim chance they did manage to catch some shut-eye.
He was equally sure none of the others would know how to construct a lethal garrotte out of the ridiculous yellow and white plastic masks, the correct use of which the stewards were currently giving a synchronised demonstration of, each one of them giving the automatic pilot in the cockpit a run for its money. Jeez, he was certain he would be the only passenger who had experience of using a plastic pen to both save and take a human life. He winced as he acknowledged to his internal commentator that he’d only ever saved one life that way but had used a pen to kill someone on three separate occasions.
There were a few people he’d like to kill right now and with the way he was feeling, he wouldn’t need any weapons whatsoever. Maybe it was true what Juanita had said. That he was as bad as the people he was tasked with eliminating and that with people like him, the vortex of death would continue for as long as he lived, until both he and everyone close to him, was dead. The fact that he’d made his beautiful brown-eyed girl blue, was one of the main reasons he felt like tearing the head off the overweight man in the seat in front, who continually bounced in his seat as he attempted to get the attention of a steward.
