On the platform at Kurfürstendamm, the heat was suffocating and Colin looked around in vain for somewhere to sit. Since seeing the story about Ajnur, his mind had been racing; the idea that the vibrant young man he’d met in Ernst-Thälmann Park was dead seemed incomprehensible. And the fact he should be linked to yet another death was disturbing. The carriage was full, so Colin remained standing on the crowded train, his face thrust into the armpit of his nearest neighbour. At least the windows were open, offering some respite from the sweltering heat. He’d never experienced anything like it; the temperature had hovered around the mid-thirties for weeks and was forecast to continue. Any exertion was a challenge and trying to sleep had become its own form of torture. For weeks he’d lain awake half the night worrying about the case, unable to stop thinking about it, but getting nowhere as his mind went round in circles.

He leaned his head against a pole and closed his eyes, recalling Ajnur by the pond – his curiosity and eagerness to connect – and he couldn’t help but feel he’d failed to protect him. That night, he’d been convinced someone was following him, but maybe it was Ajnur who was being followed. Regardless, with the discovery of another gay man’s body in a city park, surely the police would have to re-examine the other deaths? He opened his eyes and stared out of the window as the pitch-black tunnel walls flew past.

In obvious need of major repair, it reminded him of his old secondary school in Glasgow. Like so much of the city, Colin wondered how long it would be before a developer got their hands on it to convert into swanky new apartments. For now, however, it appeared to be a thriving community space at the heart of the local neighbourhood.

To his surprise, he found Bela sitting on the steps by the entrance, staring up at the sky. As he approached, Colin realised they’d not spoken to each other since the night of the Griechen Fabrik party. When Colin had caught up with Bela, he had calmed down and seemed more sober, but he didn’t want to talk, other than to say he accepted things were over between them, but that it still hurt. Colin’s lingering memory of their goodbye was how subdued Bela had been.

‘Fancy seeing you here,’ Colin said. ‘I’ve been meaning to call.’

‘Have you?’ Bela removed his sunglasses. ‘I find that hard to believe.’ Flicking a strand of hair from his eyes he said, ‘Kim’s had some bad news.’

Despite the initial prickly remark – which he deserved – Bela seemed less intense than usual: he was wearing a trendy pair of shorts and T-shirt and had re-styled his hair. ‘I’m sorry to hear that,’ Colin said. ‘You know I’m supposed to be meeting her?’ He instinctually went
