Chapter 14

Tyler stood in his bathroom, toothbrush in hand, squirting some paste onto it, when a knock came on his front door. It was after midnight. Damn it. Was there another toilet backed up?

He set his toothbrush down. “I’m comin’.” He grabbed a tee from the end of the bed and pulled it over his head. When he opened the door, he saw the last person he’d expected. “Is everything okay?”

“It is now.” Dani stepped in and pressed to him, her lips instantly connecting with his. He kissed her back and they melted into each other.

Her kiss was hungry, but soft at the same time. It felt great, but something was off. He pulled back, his arms still around her, and rested his forehead on hers. “What’s goin’ on in that pretty head of yours?”

She sucked in a breath then sighed as she let it out. “A lot.”

“Then come on in. Maybe I can help.” He pulled her into the cabin and closed the door.

His accommodations weren’t much to brag about. Basic cabin with a small kitchen/living space and a bedroom that basically fit a bed, dresser, and not much else. But it worked for him. He rarely was there.

He brought Dani to his couch and flipped on a lamp next to it. “What’s going on?”

“Everything.”

“Can you be a little more specific?”

She looked down at her hands in her lap and fiddled with a fingernail and the polish that was peeling off. “I had a talk with Loretta earlier tonight. She really opened my eyes about a lot of things.”

“Like what?”

She met his gaze. “Oh, just life and mistakes and where I’m meant to be.”

“Is that all?”

She let out a small laugh. “Yeah. Nothing like laying awake in bed contemplating the last six years of your life and wondering if it was all a giant mistake.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“I don’t want to bother you with my problems.”

“Then why are you here, sweetheart?”

A sly smile formed. “I was kinda hoping you’d help me not think about those things.”

“And how exactly did you want me to do that?”

“Do I have to spell it out?”

“Absolutely.”

“You’re horrible.”

“Hey. You came to me. I’m not a mind reader.” He loved their playful banter. Far more than he should.

“You don’t need to be a mind reader to know that when a women jumps on you and kisses you at this time of night, she has one thing on her mind.”

“Checking to see if I brushed my teeth before bed? It’s a no, by the way. You interrupted me.”

“So sorry. Should I leave, now that I know the answer?”

“Unless you have another reason to stay.”

She stood from the couch and slid onto his lap, just like she’d been last night, and yanked her shirt off over her head. Bare breasts on display. His hands itched to touch them, his mouth watering.

“Is this reason enough?” she asked.

Fuck yes, he wanted to say. But not like this. Not when she was so obviously pained inside. “There will be plenty of time for that.
