5 The Fleet Commanders

“Rebecca 999799, reporting in. Red Fleet Central, this is Tango Leader One of 6th battalion… are you receiving, over?”

She stood in the centre of the ship and signalled the Red Fleet Command on the communications monitor I rigged for her. I watched off to the side (well hidden from view) on another one that didn’t have a micro-camera in it. It took a few minutes to get a response, but once they linked up to the drop ship’s transmitter the image came in clear. The slow static and scrolling eventually revealed a face, one that looked all too familiar to me.

“Becca! Good to see you’re still in one piece. We wrote you off after the clean up mission.”

“Sir! Good to see you too, Fleet Commander Davis.” She nodded with a smile. “I survived and just wanted to let you know.”

I couldn’t believe it was the same guy. Well, no, it wasn’t the same FC… this one had a moustache (a big bushy one) and he looked a tad more beefy than our guy. The two seemed rather chatty. She treated him more like a father-figure and that was a bit disconcerting to me. Our FC was a tough S.O.B. who barked at the soldiers if they so much spoke to him directly via comm-screen.

Even when I was sitting in my Commander’s office, just before he shoved me to the frontline, I had the feeling I was ‘bothering’ him. I continued to listen on as they finished the pleasantries and she finally got into the questions I needed her to ask.

“Sir, I know it’s against protocol to inspect the enemy’s tech, but… I needed to fix some of my suit’s systems and noticed we kinda shared the same inner workings.” The look on his face shifted dramatically. He went from all smiles to frowning and grimacing smirks. She continued on. “I accidentally popped the face shield of the dead soldier and—well—I noticed that he had the same face of some of our troops.”

“It’s probably a trick of the enemy.” He passively dismissed. “Those treasonous colonials trying to trick us into thinking we’ve got the same guys as ours. Or worst, it might have even been facial reconstruction to sympathize and distract. We’re here on behalf of Earth to stop them at all cost. They’ll do whatever it takes to fool us.”

“Right…” Rebecca said with skepticism.

At least I heard that in her voice, I wasn’t too sure if he did. She folded her arms and shifted her stance slightly, the moment of silence got me worried for a few milliseconds, but a click of her tongue soon had me breathe a sigh of relief. I could tell she was unconvinced of his answer.

“You know, Davis…. Sorry, I mean, Commander. I looked at a lot of these faces down here. And it’s looking very… too familiar looking as it were. Kinda like… we’re all the same… do you know what I mean? The weapons, vehicles, armour… And—oh, hey! Even the clones.
