As I clutched the statuette that night and the applause died away, I knew a split second of serenity. Ham and I were still married after almost four years. I was pleased about this. And I had my family.

I stared at the little gold-plated man in the palm of my hand. He was a Hollywood male and, of course, epicene; but in a kind of madness his backview was the spit of my husband’s. Since the O. in Harmon O. Nelson stood for Oscar, Oscar it has been ever since. During the evening I went to the ladies’ room where I was followed and attacked by a lady fan-magazine editor who let me have it.

I stood, my back against the pink-tiled wall, like a traitor before a firing squad. The rat-ta-ta-tat of her mouth was a barrage that almost felled me. One would have thought that I had defiled the Academy or eaten her young. Slowly her purple rage subsided and I was able to piece together the now sputtering syllables.

“How could you? A print! You could be dressed for a family dinner. Your photograph is going round the world. Don’t you realize? Aren’t you aware? You don’t look like a Hollywood star!” That again!

I was wearing a navy-and-white checked dinner dress with white piqué lapels. It was very simple and very expensive. As the hackneyed script goes, the reporter—in our privy council—informed me that I no longer had the right to do as I wished. Never say this to a Yankee.
