The person she was hoping to speak to was Charlie Evans, and she’d been waiting on a call from Jonathan. She knew it could come in at any moment, but when her phone rang and she saw the call was coming from an anonymous number, Olivia frowned. Suddenly she was glad to be alone if it turned out to be Paxton calling back. Henry had dropped her back at her room after their trip to Richard Greene’s home, and she was chomping at the bit to know if Paxton already had some information for her.

“Hello?” Olivia said quietly as she picked up the call. She didn’t want Henry to hear her talking again, especially when one of the subjects of conversation would undoubtedly be Henry himself. Then he would definitely question her about the whole thing.

But the voice on the other end of the line surprised her.

“Olivia?”

“Blake?” Olivia frowned.

Olivia only knew Supervisory Special Agent Blake Wilder through Paxton, despite both working for the Bureau. They’d come together on a case recently to help rescue Paxton after he’d recklessly plunged headfirst into the organization that he’d discovered was responsible for Veronica’s death. Olivia didn’t know her well at all, but she respected Blake. She was the kind of strong, capable, fearless agent Olivia wanted to become. Blake’s recent takedown of a far-ranging conspiracy that netted several high-profile government officials had turned her into one of the FBI’s brightest stars. And it made Olivia respect her even more.

“What’s going on, Blake?”

“Pax gave me an update on what’s going on,” she started. “I’m sorry about Brock. I don’t know him well, but we worked together once or twice back when I was stationed in New York a while back. Good guy and a hell of an agent. I didn’t realize the two of you were partners.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that,” replied Olivia. “But I don’t get the feeling this is a social call.”

Blake let out a soft chuckle. “Intuitive as ever.”

Despite the first impression they’d had that had left Olivia feeling pretty intimidated, she found herself grateful that Blake was reaching out. Just from her limited exposure to Blake, Olivia knew she had a tendency to be somewhat firm and blunt from time to time, but she had a genuine sense of empathy at her core that every agent needed. In a way, she was like a mix of Brock and Olivia herself.

“I have some information that you may find interesting,” Blake said, “but it’s absolutely imperative that you keep this completely under wraps.”

Olivia nodded. Cloak and dagger seemed to be the way of things everywhere these days. “Sure. What do you have for me?”

“Well, Pax asked around, and wouldn’t you know it, he struck up a conversation with my sister. And now he’s got her running on the case, even when I told her not to…”

Olivia hadn’t ever met Blake’s sister Kit, but she’d heard her name mentioned before. She wasn’t sure of all the details, but knew that Kit had suddenly reappeared after a very long time of being thought dead.
