A kayak or canoe is the best DIY option for the LoCo. A guided raft or jet boat trip will shorten the learning curve.

Cypress trees and rugged limestone formations, Rios, extensive public access. Access points: 15

Onion Creek, just south of downtown, makes it easy to get away—on a lunch break, on the way home from work, or for an easy Saturday morning. I think of it as one of the two bookends of urban fishing in Austin. It was the first local stream I spent significant time on, nearly two decades ago, and even though some reaches look a lot different today, it’s still a terrific place to fish. Bonus: The lower reaches are surrounded by thousands of acres of city, county, and state lands—more public property now than when I was first introduced to the stream.

Like the northern bookend, Brushy Creek, Onion Creek really is a small river, with numerous tributary streams. The creek rises at springs about 12 miles southeast of Johnson City, in Blanco County, and flows 79 miles, past Driftwood and through Buda in Hays County, to join the Colorado River in Del Valle, just east of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

“The best time to go fishing is when you can get away.”

Robert Traver, Trout Madness
