The road I’m on is no less crowded forcing me to go much slower than I have been on the fast-paced and wider NH6. For ten days I had been able to ride long stretches at speeds of 80 kmph. That is no longer possible on this road which is now going through Krishnanagar, a suburb of Kolkata. Today, festive-fever has gripped the populace here, and why not? The mother of all festivals is coming. A policeman blows his whistle and I stop. Half the width of the road ahead has been cordoned off for an upcoming pandal and traffic is being regulated around it. The pandal builders have dug deep holes in the tar road and thick staves of wood are being fixed upright by bare-chested young men who are ramming rocks around the base. Others are unloading wooden planks from a truck. The policeman blows his whistle again and I get moving.
