“Aha,” said June. “You need to find a room with blue-and-white tiles. Like a bathroom? What are you looking up over there?”

Nora made a swiping motion. “There’s more to the riddle. Keep reading.”

“I see. There’s a cat and something that’s head and shoulders above the rest. What’s white and blue and tall? A UNC basketball player?” June laughed.

Estella, who’d been too busy scrolling through images on her phone to catch the joke, made a squeaking noise. “Look! I searched for blue-and-white tiles with a farmer, and this popped up.”

Leaning over the makeshift table, Nora examined the image of a Delft tile showing a farmer in a field. The only other objects were a tree and a cow.

“Look up Delft tile with goose,” urged June.

Estella complied and was rewarded with a page full of images.

“See? I have to get into the house and look for Delft tiles,” said Nora.

“We’ll come with you! What time are you going tonight?”

Nora vehemently shook her head. “You’re pregnant, which means you’re not stepping foot in that house. I’m sorry, but the place is a hotbed of mold and rot.”

June bumped shoulders with Estella. “You can still help. You found the tiles on your phone. Maybe you can find images to match the other riddles.” She threw a hopeful glance at Nora. “What about me? Can I go? And Hester? A treasure hunt would be a great distraction for her.”

“I’d have to clear it with Beck, but what reason can I give him for bringing you two along? If I tell him about The Little Lost Library, he’ll search for the clues himself, and then I’ll never know what message Lucille was trying to send me.”

They contemplated this hurdle in silence for several minutes.

Then Estella snapped her fingers. “I think I’ve got it. Lucille’s kids want to put the house on the market, right? Maybe the owners of the Lodge caught wind of this and think Wynter House might be a good space for, I don’t know, yoga or meditation workshops. That might get June in the door. As the Guest Experience Manager, it makes sense that she’d be scoping out the house on behalf of her employers.”

“And Hester’s a member of the Miracle Springs Historical Society,” June added, her eyes shimmering with excitement. “She can say that the society is looking for a historic home to use as a visitor’s center or museum.”

After mulling over their ideas, Nora said, “I know Beck and Harper want to clean out the house before putting it on the market, but I also know they’re both impatient to get back to their lives. It’s worth a shot. Are you free tonight, June?”

Standing up, June began cleaning up their lunch items. “I have Bible study, but I can miss it this time. Even though Jesus is the only real treasure in this life, this believer still wants to help you search for the one hidden in Lucille’s house.”

The thought of June and Hester joining in the hunt made Nora feel positively buoyant.
