“Still not done with your ‘smoke break’,” said Alsayed, miming quotation marks with his fingers.

Emma put down her puzzle book, dropped her pen, and gave her colleague a blasé look. “What do you want, Jamal?”

“Any news about this key thing?”

“Almeida is on it, going through all the comments under the post. You should see the number of ACABs, it’s frightening.”

He shrugged and his face took on an amused look. “All Cops Are Bastards? People don’t like cops, that’s a fact. I prefer hate speech to projectiles aimed at us when we’re on the job though,” he added.

“As far as I’m concerned, neither. I think it’s a very serious matter that such slander can be committed with impunity.”

“Freedom of speech,” Jamal said with a sigh.

“If we let these people insult us without lifting a finger, we cultivate their hatred and, you know as well as I how far things can go.”

Jamal squatted down to tie one of his shoelaces and then stood back up. “I know, Emma, don’t forget that I’m a Muslim cop,” he said.

“Don’t forget that I am a woman,” she retorted.

He seemed to take in the full scope of Emma’s remarks, and nodded in agreement.

A few seconds passed before she broke the silence. “What’s up on your side? The escort site, the pros?”

He shook his head. “Squat. The few girls we managed to reach out to know each other, but no one has ever heard of a Jenni Grosch-Steiner. Besides, without any pictures to show them, it didn’t take us long to run out of arguments.”

“Michael thinks that this guy, Bruno Costa, didn’t tell us everything he knows. He’d like to interview him again.”

“What? He wants us to call him back?” said Alsayed.

She nodded. “I don’t think there’s much to get out from him but I’m still convinced that there’s something wrong with this Jenni.”

“Female instinct?”

She opened her eyes wide and he burst out laughing. “I’m teasing you, sis!” he said, raising his arms in the air.

With a slight smile at the corner of her lips, she seized an eraser on the desk and threw it at her colleague. “Don’t you have enough sisters as it is? Go back to work, lazy ass!”

Jamal walked away and Emma felt a chill run down her spine. Her female instinct, as Alsayed called it, often took this form. She was certain that Bruno Costa was hiding something from them and that there was an important detail hidden in the turpitude of his relationship with Jenni.

She approached Boris’s office and borrowed the report on the search of the escort’s house. She had been there, but wanted to see the scene again with fresh eyes. Crime Scene had frozen the place, so she immersed herself in the report to browse the apartment virtually. An elaborate technique that Michael had taught her.

It was a question of stabilizing her breathing, and focusing on her sensations, and to finally create a vacuum in her mind and project mental images of the place. For that, it was sometimes simpler to be helped by smells or sounds perceived during the first visit.
