IT WAS WEDNESDAY morning and Camilla Stålberg had called the team for a morning briefing. It had been almost five days since Tricia Andersen was found murdered, and they hadn’t been able to make an arrest yet. She normally didn’t join the morning briefings, but this time, things were different. Normally, she was busy with other things. Camilla reported to the chairman of the municipal council, Ingela Starck, every afternoon. And soon, it was time for her to meet with the ‘Vision Zero’ group. The group’s job was to follow up the work with the citizen pledges. The pledges were promises to the citizens of Gothenburg regarding what the police would do to make their lives better in the different parts of the city. In two weeks, she was supposed to present the result at the Gothenburg Opera. She would take to the stage together with a moderator. The citizen pledges had been put together during a number of workshops that had taken place throughout the year, and 430 children from different parts of the city had been chosen to read them aloud in front of their fellow students. These 430 children would remember these promises forever. But what kind of city could she offer them? Right now, it wasn’t safe. The relationship between the uniformed officers and the young people out on the streets was dire. The citizenry had lost faith in the police.

‘Please grab a coffee and have a seat,’ she told Emir, Sandra, Dennis, Nathalie and Jesper Korp.

‘Oh, will there be cake too?’ Emir joked. For some reason, she always let his jokes slide. If Dennis had made the same comment, she would have snapped at him and killed the vibe in a heartbeat. She couldn’t help it.

‘Sit down,’ Camilla said and tapped her newly manicured nails against the table. Cleuda had told her she liked Nathalie’s nails once and since then she had started getting her nails done every three months. She had found a woman at a nail parlour that she really liked to go to. The fact that the two of them didn’t speak the same language made the whole experience even more relaxing.

‘Do you want me to take notes?’ Nathalie asked.

‘You don’t have to ask me that every time,’ Camilla answered her and sighed.

When everyone had taken their seats, she realised Nathalie was crying.

‘What’s going on?’ Sandra asked.

‘Maybe Nathalie is upset about the rude answer to her polite question?’ Dennis suggested.

‘Oh, come on,’ Camilla said. ‘Emir, please take Nathalie outside for a while. You guys can come back when she’s feeling better. Dennis, can you please take notes until they’re back?’

Dennis pulled out his black notebook. He scribbled down the time and date of the meeting and then he drew a skull in the right corner. Camilla told the team what was on the agenda for the upcoming weeks, apart from the high priority cases. Tricia Andersen’s murder was still topping the list, and Dennis and Sandra were expected to be on top of it.
